Dia is a gtk+ based diagram creation program released under the GPL license.

Dia is designed to be much like the commercial Windows program ‘Visio’. It can be used to draw many different kinds of diagrams. It currently has special objects to help draw entity relationship diagrams, UML diagrams, flowcharts, network diagrams, and simple circuits. It is also possible to add support for new shapes by writing simple XML files, using a subset of SVG to draw the shape.

It can load and save diagrams to a custom XML format (gzipped by default, to save space), can export diagrams to EPS or SVG formats and can print diagrams (including ones that span multiple pages).

You’ll need the Windows installer, too.

yesterday i converted my s.f. state talk to a streaming download. now i need to begin testing smaller pieces.

i think i’ll convert sherrin’s graphics from the nokia event into a sample of how to do it. the powerpoint screen measures 941 x 706 pixels. sheet of mural paper is ratio of 941:607. the four megapixel image is 1413 x 912.

into a blank powerpoint file, i dropped one 941×607 wall-graphic. then i’m cutting up chunks of the 1413×912 version for display as close-ups.

adding text labels to the chunks makes their meaning more clear.

i’ve put a mini-version (150 pixels wide) of the overall page in the top right corner of the page of close-ups to show viewers where we’re coming from. several of these can fip on one frame, differentiated by color.

my photos of the graphics are too dark. using paintshop pro, i’ve boosted the gamma to lighten them up but i’m starting to lose contrast. alternatively, using the contrast control in powerpoint does a pretty good job of this, too.

this morning we awoke to sirens and the smell of smoke. firemen were trucking down poppy lane and keeler street to snuff a flaming pinetree just the other side of remillard park. orville schell could see flames shooting up from the end of a line of trees that reaches behind his house. the neighborhood turned out to watch the firemen. several people saw a suspicious van in the neighborhood about 20 minutes before the fire broke out. arson is suspected.
