Blame the 80/20 rule. Miners in the California Gold Rush waterblasted the hills, grabbed the nuggets, and let the tailings silt the bottoms of the rivers that flowed to the sea.

For a long time now, business has sought profits from what I’ll call the big middle. Segment the market (i.e. chop it into pieces), analyse the pieces, pick the ones you want, and focus your energies there. Make money off the big sellers, the hits, the fads, the stuff with mindshare. Go for volume.
